Porn addiction – The importance of accountability to recover

“It is not only what we do, but also what we do not do, for which we are accountable.” – Moliere

The meaning

Accountability is the acknowledgement and assumption of responsibility for actions, decisions and results. Being answerable for resulting consequences of one’s actions and decisions.

We are accountable for what we do and do not do.

The importance

There is a tremendous freedom in knowing that you are responsible for you, your actions, decisions and the results they generate.

A core belief I carry is:

I am responsible for my thoughts and state of mind, and there for my results.

No one can control outside factors such as our environment how we are perceived by others, BUT. How we respond to those factors is within our power to control.

The one thing above all else that is within our power to change, master and control is ourselves.

Accepting responsibility for that knowledge is very liberating.

It is for example outside of my power to control how much tress I will be put under during the next month or even just tomorrow, BUT. It is within my power to choose how I respond to that stress, AND. How I manage that stress.

How is this related to recovering from porn addiction?

When accountability is properly implemented in the recovery process you will have:

  • Accountability software installed on all connected devices. For example, Covenant Eyes or Blockade.
  • You have an accountability partner that answer to you and you to your partner.
  • If working your recovery with a professional recovery coach, you will be encouraged to reverse engineer setbacks to implement systems and tools to progress towards an addiction free life.

A healthy understanding and implementation of accountability is by no means a blame game or to be confused with pointing fingers.

To implement accountability in a healthy way in all aspects of life means:

Focus on what is within your power to change, in order to grow and progress towards any and all goals you have in life.

Know and live the difference!

Let’s take a few relatable daily scenarios:

  1. A sudden drive to the store to pick up milk. No one will know if you spend a few minutes watching porn on your phone before driving back.
  2. Dropping the kid/s of for school. Do you head straight for work, or do you see the opportunity?
  3. 10 minutes left of the lunchbreak, do you cut the lunch short and get to work? Plan a weekend activity? Or seize the moment?
  4. Coming home after a stressful day to realize that you will be alone for about an hour. Do you get productive by healthy stress management?

Do you have systems, tools and people and yourself to hold you accountable for your actions?

The true and healthy form of accountability comes from a place of love towards one self, family and friends. A professional recovery coach comes from a place of experience and understanding about the situation and the fact that without accountability the person have little change of winning the battle against the addiction.

“Ninety-nine percent of all failures come from people who have a habit of making excuses.” – George Washington Carver

Instead of focusing on excuses or outside events that is outside of your control. Focus on what is within your control to change and tweak.
