Porn addiction – Development and escalation

You might suspect that you or a loved one is addicted to porn.

How is porn addictive?

Addition at the core works the same way for porn, cocaine or heroin.

By frequently taking substances or do activities that release extreme volumes of dopamine which is a “feelgood” chemical that your brain naturally desires.

It is released to ensure the survival of our species by:

  • Encourage eating fat, sugar and nutrient dens food.
  • Encourage reproduction:
  • Reward acquiring and perfecting skills.

These activities have throughout history been crucial for the survival of the human race and it is not left to chance, the crucial behaviours are encouraged and rewarded by the potent chemical dopamine that makes the brain feel really happy and wanting more.

An addiction to drugs, alcohol or porn is at its core the brains link between a behaviour or substance and extreme levels of dopamine.

When you watch porn, you brain is tricked. It thinks you are watching a potential sexual mate and dopamine is released to encourage reproduction. The neural processes in the brain cannot tell the difference between watching pornographic material and being faced with a situation that is likely to end in reproducing.

The effects of chronic porn use

Porn addiction is a behavioural addiction, like gambling and sex addiction.

By compulsively engage in the behaviour over a longer period of time the brain will get used to the massive dumps of dopamine and require ever larger doses to get the same “kick”. That is why all addictions escalade beyond the addicted persons control.

That chain of events take place in the brain of everyone that is developing an addiction. The difference is what the brain have associated extreme levels of dopamine with, be it porn, heroine or cocaine.

The good news is that when you stop watching porn, the process that have taken place in the brain will start to reverse, and in time completely healed or reversed.

That takes time, and commitment from you.
